In Cluj, the academic activity begins in the 16th century, with the foundation of the first college in the country (1581) that operated according to the Charter of European Universities of those times. Some laical and religious schools are established in the 17th and 18th centuries, and in the 19th century, the academic phenomenon starts to develop. In 1919, after the unification, on December 1st 1918, the first Romanian academic institutions are established in Transylvania: the “Superior Dacia” University, the Conservatory of Music and Dramatic Art, the Academy of Superior Commercial Studies (1919) and the School of Fine Arts (1926).
At present, the University of Art and Design is an integrant part of Cluj academic education, together with “Babeş-Bolyai” University, “Iuliu Haţieganu” University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Technical University, University of Agricultural Studies, “Gheorghe Dima” Music Academy and different other private universities. About 80,000 students study every year in these institutions, guided by a teaching staff comprising over 3,500 specialists.

In orasul Cluj-Napoca coexista religiile ortodoxa, greco-catolica, romano-catolica, reformata, mozaica, unitariana, calvina, evanghelica, baptista etc. Clujul este un important centru al cultelor, aici avandu-si sediul: Arhiepiscopia Ortodoxa a Vadului, Feleacului si Clujului, Episcopia Romano-Catolica, Episcopia Romana de Cluj – Gherla (Unita cu Roma), Episcopia Reformata, Episcopia Unitariana si Episcopia Evanghelica (Luterana).

Cultural and artistic life

Cluj-Napoca has a cultural and artistic life invigorated by the National Theater, Romanian Opera, Hungarian State Theater, Hungarian Opera, “Puck” Puppet Theater, as well as by different museums and art galleries: the Art Museum, the Ethnographic Museum – with an exquisite out-doors section, the National History Museum of Transylvania. “Transylvania” State Philharmonic, as well as Antifonia choir, enjoy worldwide fame. Moreover, professional associations, such as Plastic Artists Union, Architects’ Union, Writers’ Union, a.o., bring an important contribution to the city’s cultural life. The three large libraries of Cluj-Napoca, the University Central Library, “Octavian Goga” County Library and the Academy Library, shelter books and manuscripts of great value. The city’s cultural life is completed by the activities of the British, French, German and Italian cultural centers, as well as by the culture magazines, among which: Steaua, Tribuna, Apostrof, Echinox, Idea.
