Antero Olin - "On the Road" at the Casa Matei Gallery
-
The University of Art and Design Cluj-Napoca in collaboration with the Finish Embassy in Bucharest organizes between the 28th of April the 11th of May 2009 the exhibition “On the Road” belonging to the Finish artist Antero Olin. The opening will take place at the Casa Matei Gallery, Tuesday the 28th of April 2009 at 6 pm.
Graduating from the Finish Art Institute in Lahti and the Art Academy in Stockholm (Sweden), having an impressive number of solo and group exhibitions, as well as many awards obtained during his 40 years long artistic activity, the Finish graphic artist Antero Olin is well known not only in his native country Finland, but also in Hungary where he spends most of his daily and artistic existence.
« On the Road », Antero Olin's exhibition at the Casa Matei Gallery, marks his second presence with a solo exhibition in Romania, after last year's exhibition in Bucharest. As the title says, the 54 works from this exhibition represent landscapes and places from Hungary, Italy, Greece or Finland, poiting out not only a spiritual road, but also a geographic one, important as a source of inspiration for the Finish artist.
Antero Olin has always been attracted to the past and its architectural relics; perhaps this originates from the fact the Finland is not so rich in castles and towers as Mediterranean landscapes are. His historical and architectural references range from Ancient Rome to the 20th century
Antero Olin is incredibly precise, accurate, depicting views in a realistic manner; he makes perfect compositions: works are balanced within the space of the picture; balance is kept between the building and the relatively minimal landscape in the background and the emphatic counterpoint of the sky. Olin produces order and harmony by surrounding black or brown building blocks with bluish-lilac and yellowish-orange sky – or elsewhere with embossed clouds.
Olin reminds us and pays his respects to the buildings and their constructors. Apart from goitered sills, geometric decorations, functional supporting arches, and vaulted windows, it is much more important that Olin can talk about human accomplishment, the history of the symbols of force, the volatility and elusiveness of power, the splendour and troubles of historical times, as well as devastation and threat as only art can talk.
« On the Road », Antero Olin's exhibtion at the Casa Matei Gallery is part of the cultural exchanges between the University of Art and Design Cluj-Napoca and the Finish Embassy in Bucharest, a collaboration that has started last year with the photo exhibition belonging to the Finish photographer Wilma Hurskainen.
The opening from the 28th of April will be followed on the 29th of April by a workshop kept by Antero Olin and dedicated to the graphic art students from the UAD Cluj-Napoca.
